If not, I'd suggest trying it, I'm using it with an x1900 xt and I'm very happy with the 3d performance. When you say you've tried the open drivers, are you referring to the latest gallium mesa driver from git?
The support for everything prior to the hd2000 series was dropped some time back, you could use an older fglrx but that means using an older x server and kernel too.
